Downloaded the 1.1.0 release via http://forum.springframework.org/showthread.php?t=56897
In the download is a building-framework.txt file that gives instructions for building - should this file really appear in this download?

There is no building-framework.txt file in the 1.1.0 distribution - you probably refer to readme-building.txt which appears only in the -with-dependencies artifact which contains the sources, integration tests and the entire project.
The readme file is for those that would like to build the sources..
Could you explain why readme.txt doesn't work for you (it's not that obvious to me)?

My mistake - you're right, it was readme-building.txt file I meant. I was using this file because while the plain readme.txt file refers to a samples directory, there isn't one in the -with-dependencies directory so I was trying to figure out if I needed to create it. Digging further I see that the samples directory is under source - if that's how things are supposed to be then please close this!
